Is there a way to erase small bits of a line?

I don't want to use the Undo to get rid of an entire line that I've just laid down. Instead, I would like to go back to an earlier line and erase a portion of it, like what is possible with the erase tool in Photoshop.

I suggest you try the Splice toll (first select your line, then look for Splice on the right hand menu)
That should let you remove segments from your line.

I recognize this might not do exactly what you're looking for, and I have a better solution in progress already. But it's going to take a while before it's available.
